Towns County Democrats Newletter
February 17, 2025
Hello Fellow Democrats,
I know we are all looking on in shock and dismay at what is happening nationally and within the states as President Elon Musk and his muskrats disassemble the programs like USAID which help build democracies and thereby prevent the rise of autocracies, oligarchies and dictatorships, and through food aide stabilize the world against famine, and thereby reduce the trends toward mass migrations and dislocations of poor and oppressed populations – you know, the people the Trumpicans (there are no longer any Republicans) want to stop entering our country looking for safety, freedom and their very lives. Now word is President Musk and his muskrats want to dismantle education (ignorance is their ally), want access to all our information including tax records (like the tax records Trump continues to hide from the public), and recently denied FEMA aide to Georgia families still struggling with the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. Meanwhile, the oligarchs are looting the country and preparing to direct an indolent and complacent Congress to cut their taxes again even as Trump imposes a hidden tax in the form of trade war tariffs on us.
In one year and 10 months we will have a chance to start to end authoritarian Trumpicanism and reclaim our country as a nation of law, with systems to hold leaders accountable for their criminal actions and rebalance the power of the people against the greed of oligarchs so that we can be a nation based on Freedom, Justice, and Opportunity for all.
What do I mean? The midterm election is Nov. 3, 2026, (one year and 10 months away) and we will have an opportunity to replace the Trump sycophant Andrew Clyde while keeping our highly effective Senator Jon Ossoff in office. To make that happen, we have to start organizing now and building the case that what is going on in Washington today is an historical aberration, a fundamental abandonment of American values, which the American people (our neighbors and friends) must recognize and stop.
The Towns County Democrats are here and we mean business. This year, we have established a permanent office in Hiawassee at 355 N. Main Street. The Towns County Democratic Committee meets there on the second Thursday of every month at 5:30 p.m. Please feel welcome to attend for information, share your insights, and fellowship with fellow Democrats.
In our Feb. 13 meeting, we set up two key subcommittees to manage communications (public outreach and messaging) and activities (community events and engagement). These two functions will enhance the impact of having a central location where Democrats can gather and support each other and work on ideas for improving life in Towns County. I can’t guarantee office hours yet, but if you are in the area and the flag is out, feel free to drop in.
What can you do? The most important thing you can do is get active – don’t wait for the election and hope for the best; get busy making your voice heard in the halls of power! How?
Let our elected officials (regardless of their party affiliation) hear from you. Call, write, email and attend (Commissioner and City Council meetings, and town hall meetings). Express your opinion on the events which impact you, our cities, our county and the nation. Below are addresses where you can find our city leaders and make yourself heard.
